Mercury in Older Dental Fillings May Be Non-Toxic

Based on a recent study on the surface chemistry of silver-colored, mercury-amalgam fillings, certain types of mercury found in older dental fillings is believed to be less toxic than originally thought. According to researchers, the surfaces of metal fillings appear to lose up to 95 percent of their mercury over time. Loss of the potentially toxic type of mercury from amalgam could result from evaporation, dental hygiene product use, exposure to specific foods or other causes.
